Since 1958, Ravenswood Community Council has served the diverse interests of local residents and businesses. Originally founded to fight crime and blight, RCC was one of the first urban conservation commissions in Chicago. Over five decades, RCC has led efforts to preserve affordable housing, eliminate troubled buildings, developed the "Shop 47" campaign, assisted in the redevelopment of the Ravenswood industrial corridor and helped respond to urban deforestation through the Greening of Ravenswood.
Today, our initiatives are shaped by local residents and businesses and are designed to improve life for our entire community. RCC has worked continuously to keep the community focused on the causes and prevention of crime problems by sponsoring workshops and forums on personal safety, gangs, and violence, by supporting crime victims in court, and by working with local law enforcement through CAPS and other community policing initiatives.
While we have remained focused on these serious issues, over time RCC has broadened the scope of its work to include all aspects of community life. Today, RCC is a certified 501(c)3 not for profit organization, and we are doing more than ever:
- Operating a full-time community service office.
- Administering Greater Ravenswood Special Service Area #31, providing sidewalk cleaning, snow removal, landscaping, business corridor planning and improvements.
- Identifying and responding to socio-economic issues important to our community members and local businesses.
RCC is a membership organization, and we depend on our members for direction and support. If you have concerns about the Ravenswood area or simply want to get involved in making our community better please visit our “Membership” page and join us in our goal of building a stronger Ravenswood.
New Vision and Mission
We believe creativity, sustainable living, and vitality position Ravenswood as a destination neighborhood. RCC connects residents and businesses through a proactive and inclusive approach to community issues.
We envision the Ravenswood community as a destination neighborhood, with a sustainable local economy, great schools, and a safe, beautiful place to live and work.
To promote a vibrant, locally-focused economy through community involvement; to connect our schools and learning centers with neighborhood stakeholders, and invest in initiatives that support our broader vision.
Developing initiatives that will create tangible goals for RCC in in the next few months.
